Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, stepped down following prolonged and violent anti-government demonstrations, marking the
conclusion of her over two-decade-long tenure at the helm of the nation's politics.
Ms. Hasina, aged 76, departed the country and reportedly arrived in India on Monday. Celebratory crowds poured onto the streets to mark the occasion,
with reports of some individuals breaching the prime ministerial palace, allegedly engaging in looting and vandalizing sections of her former residence.
Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that the military will initiate discussions regarding the establishment of an interim government.
Shortly after Ms. Hasina resigned, President Mohammed Shahabuddin issued an order for the release of imprisoned former Prime Minister and opposition leader, Khaleda Zia.
In a televised announcement on Monday afternoon, Waker-uz-Zaman stated that plans were underway to establish an interim government.
He further mentioned that he planned to meet with President Mohammed Shahabuddin and expressed optimism that a resolution would be reached by day's end.
Demonstrators were observed removing furniture from the prime minister's residence.
The nation has witnessed numerous military coups, with the most recent occurring in 2007.
